Default Reasoning with a Constraint Resolution Principle
نویسنده
چکیده
Common non-monotonic deduction systems such as Reiters default logic or inheritance networks must handle the multiple extension problem, i.e. generally they have distinct consistent sets of conclusions (extensions) which can be drawn from a theory. Most of these systems do not provide any control structure that helps to determine in which of these extensions inferences are made. Default proof theories are in most cases only able to prove if a sentence is in at least one extension. We create a resolution based system for default reasoning where an explicit control set can be built during reasoning and where default assumptions made in a deduction are remembered as constraints. The resulting system is a cumulative default logic which assures an even stricter cumulativity than Brewka's Cumulative Default Logic and is strong enough to express Poole's Framework for default reasoning. It turns out that the created system ranges from the logic with restricted quantiiers of H.J.B urckert via Reiter's default logic to the logic of theory change of GG ardenfors.

متن کاملWP1.1 Survey of algorithms for non-monotonic formalisms applied to geographic information
According to the report on non-monotonic reasoning (Year 1 deliverable), three approaches has been presented: default reasoning, auto-epistemic logic and circumscription. The automation of these non-monotonic reasoning formalisms has been studied and several methods and theorem provers have been proposed, most of them dedicated to default reasoning. For default reasoning, several approaches hav...
متن کاملDefault Reasoning in CHR∨
CHR∨ has emerged as a versatile knowledge representation language, usable for an unparalleled variety of automated reasoning tasks: constraint solving, optimization, classification, subsumption, classical deduction, abduction, truth-maintenance, belief revision, belief update and planning. In this paper, we add default reasoning to this list, by showing how to represent default logic theories i...
متن کاملDynamic Constraint Satisfaction with Conflict Management in Design
In this paper, we focus on techniques for constraint-based design tasks with continuous variables in dynamic environments. We show how design spaces can be explored within an intelligent CAD system using a dynamic constraint satisfaction framework and a connict resolution paradigm. Navigation between diierent design spaces is controlled by assumptions the designer makes in situations of incompl...
متن کاملSurrogate reasoning
Surrogate reasoning is reasoning whose task is partially taken over by operations on external aids, such as sentences, diagrams, physical models, mathematical models, and computers. Drawing on the basic concepts in situation theory, we present a semi-formal model of surrogate reasoning. We claim that the relative advantages and disadvantages of different forms of surrogate reasoning can be expl...
